Whenever May and Jaeseop have a ride on the car, the ambience is usually loosened. May likes to listen to these unknown groups she loves so much while Jaeseop makes fun of her, though she doesn’t really mind, she’s usually too focused either on her music or her own thoughts. However, this time things are quite the opposite, Jaeseop is unusually quiet and the ambience is rather tense.
“What the hell is wrong with you to-?” It seems that Chunji is not the only one interrupting May non stop that day.
“What is it that you’re not telling me? Why was your bag stained with blood and why were you omitting details, you know that we’re going to check the evidence now, whatever you’re hiding I’ll discover it so you better tell me exactly what happened or I won’t be able to help you and Ricky-” May says nothing, she simply extends her right hand in front of Jaeseop’s face. He has a hard time hiding his shock and the guilt that cross his face.
“I didn’t…” he makes a pause.
“Mean to?” May forces a smile. “I suppose.” A brief uncomfortable silence.
“After I pushed the man to the ground, the other one put his arm around my neck and pointed at my head with his gun, he was considerably taller and stronger. The other one, the one I pushed, was short and a little bit chubby, he stood up and punched me in the face.” Though May considers the situation humiliating, she takes off her sunglasses for her partner to size the magnitude of the problem.
“But I started to tussle and I managed to get free from their hold and that was when the idiot who pointed at me with his revolver, took a clasp knife and tried to reach my face” she points at the almost invisible cut she has on the cheekbone. “But I put my hand instead, and that was when Ricky opened the door, probably he looked like an easy target for them, the same who did this to me” May shows the profound cut in the palm of her hand again “Grabbed me by the hair and pointed at Ricky with the gun and so the other did, If I had tried to get free, I’m sure they wouldn’t have hesitated on shooting. They were no regular thieves, when I tried to use my instruction in martial arts they easily won me, they were more skilled than I am” It was obvious that May was having a hard time accepting all that, saying it loud was making her question if she was really suitable for her position as detective. “They didn’t seem to be the types who hesitate when it comes to kill, but for some reason they wanted me alive, they had no interest in my brother, I think they took him just to pressure me, I clearly remember one of them saying that if I behaved, they wouldn’t hurt him.” May stops again “This” she touches her forehead distractedly as she looks at the street through the window. “The tallest one did this to me because Ricky started to yell asking for help. He said ‘whatever he does, you’ll pay for it’. They were dragging both of us into the car when the security guard of the building next door shot his gun to the air. I managed to get free and ran but instead of coming for me, they just left. It’s my fault they got Ricky, I didn’t take care of him as I should have.”
“Don’t blame yourself” May’s workmate vainly tries to cheer her up.
“At least I should have let them take me with them so Ricky wouldn’t be alone” Jaeseop meditates his next words for about a minute before finally speaking
“If they had got you, probably your brother wouldn’t be-“ he stops himself from completing the rest of the sentence when May looks at him directly in the eyes, for the first time she looks vulnerable to him, like someone who needs protection and not like the strong and independent woman he has seen all this time. The girl nods.
“I know what you mean” she mutters as she looks away trying to stop the tears from spilling out and playing with her thumbs like a little kid.
Jaeseop can’t stand looking at her like that; he wonders what kind of heartless man would do that to a woman. He feels so frustrated for not being helpful enough; as he takes his attention back to the road he makes a promise with himself. He’ll find those bastards.
Soohyun has been working in the Criminalistics Department of Seoul since he was 21, back at the day he was an inexperienced detective who would look up to his seniors with an almost insane attention. He used to continuously wonder how long would it take him to finally become like one of those talented and gifted workmates of his. Days and nights of hard work had passed and Soohyun was still stuck being the mood maker newbie of the department to the eyes of his superiors and colleagues. It didn’t really bothered him, but he also had his pride and he longed for the day when he would finally be able to take off that tag as the ‘rookie’. Soohyun was about to fall into the terrible sin of pessimism –as he used to call it- and accept that he would probably never achieve anything big working there, but just when he was about to give up that something big he was expecting for happened. Of course the circumstances weren’t exactly the best and Soohyun almost wished it hadn’t really happened the way it did. Almost dying while protecting the beautiful supervisor of the laboratory was not his idea of succeeding, but it apparently it made him finally worthy of the affection and respect of his colleagues. Instead of feeling proud or gratified, Soohyun would feel incredibly terrified and somehow annoyed whenever he recalled the foresaid event, he had in vain tried all these years to forget that traumatic experience but probably the fact he refused to talk about it, back at that time, only ended by making it more difficult to forget. In days when he’s worried or stressed, that memory would threaten to ruin even more –if possible- his mood, however he always gladly pushes those thoughts out of his mind and try to stay the positive and bright person he is. Unfortunately, this time around it seems that the ride to May’s place is longer than it has ever been, giving him time to let all these bad memories sneak into his head and deep into his chest until he’s almost unable to breath. Hoon throws him a worried glance from the driver’s seat and Soohyun’s so stressed that he immediately overreacts, giving him a long and boring telling off about keeping the eyes on the road. Although Hoon feels tempted for a brief moment to reassure his boss that May and Jaeseop are ok or would be able to overcome any potentially hazardous situation safe and sound, the younger male just directs his attention to the steering wheel and remains quiet, knowing that it’s the best thing to do.
When he parks in front of May’s, Soohyun almost jumps from the car at the sight of May and Jaeseop examining the sidewalk where the kidnap took place, they both are so concentrated in their job that none of them notices Soohyun standing next to them until Jaeseop looks up, curious about the shadow that is getting on his way.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” their boss yells, glaring at both of them and causing May to literally jump to her feet bewildered.
“Soohyun, we just…”
“Detective Kim, I’m speechless at your careless procedure, I can’t believe you’ve come here without alerting me first. I’m not pleased with your actions.” Soohyun could keep scolding them for some good reasons, but the patrols he asked for parking in the other side of the street momentarily distract him and although he is furious, the relief he feels after seeing both of his detectives safe acts as a calmative and he simply stops talking and turns round, his heart picks up its normal pace at the same time those horrible images that had formed into his mind are completely pushed away, the irrational fear that was about to drive him crazy slowly disappears and tears threaten to betray him by showing that soft side of his that he always fails to hide from his team.
“You guys are ok? Is everything alright?” Hoon smiles widely as he walks toward them, once he reaches the group he stares at his boss for some seconds before patting his back as if comforting him from a bad dream. May and Jaeseop nod their heads confused at Soohyun’s reaction.
“I thought… I was afr…” Soohyun stumbles in his own words, unable to say loud that he unreasonably allowed himself to believe that his best detectives could have been caught out of guard, that for a brief moment he felt useless and impotent and that he was afraid of someone hurting his children, as he used to call all his team to himself. “Nevermind, kids” Soohyun smirks, wondering why he’s suddenly calling a bunch of grown up adults ‘kids’ “Let’s just keep going, I have news, Taecyeon was in a covert mission and he found out that the ones behind all of this are…” Unfortunately Soohyun’s smile is forced to disappear when a sudden fuss irrupts, two black cars park in front of them and at least 6 men got off, shooting military-use guns, everything happens so fast that all he can do is to take out his revolver and confusedly give orders to his ‘kids’.
“Jaeseop careful!” Kiseop yells from his position meters away and Hoon horrified notices how a man shoots his gun pointing directly at his workmate’s chest. May’s teammate is caught off guard and apparently everybody is fairly far from him to do anything helpful. Soohyun reacts immediately and fires his gun at the same time he catches from the corner of his eye how Jaeseop falls hitting the pavement with a thud.
“You’ll regret it!” he screams and without even paying attention to anything Soohyun steps forwards and shoots his gun directly to the man who shot Jaeseop.
“They’re getting away!” Someone yells, but Soohyun ignores the fact that one of the cars is escaping with 3 people after fooling Kiseop, who’s now helping Taecyeon with 2 criminals while the police guards are handcuffing the man Hoon captured and the driver of the remaining auto. The inspector of the lab has already call an ambulance and he heavily walks towards Jaeseop, Hoon’s car is getting on his way and blocking the sight but he’s almost sure he doesn’t want to see the scene he’s about to, Hoon immediately tries to stop him from approaching.
“No, Soohyun…” but he can’t continue, he has tears on his eyes, he’s aware of what he saw and though he didn’t caught the moment when the bullet hit Jaeseop, he is pretty sure that only a miracle could have saved him.
“He’s still…” Hoon shakes his head in denial and Soohyun’s heart sinks into his chest. “No, he is!”
“If you guys are talking about me, believe me, I’m alive and I won’t leave you any time soon at least not that easily!” both Hoon and Soohyun turn their heads and find Jaeseop smiling that cat-like smile of his and May looking dizzy and leaning against him. “Now, can you please help me with detective Yoo? I think she fainted out of pure impression”
Hoon wants to give Jaeseop a sincere hug, but he immediately catches May in his arms and the girl simply buries her head on his chest and starts to cry in such a way that she startles him for a brief moment.
“Jaeseopie’s fine” Hoon carefully says, unable to understand why is she suddenly crying so badly.
“I know…” she mumbles against his chest. “But I saw it… he was almost killed because of me!”
“Yoo, what kind of nonsense are you blabbering?” Jaeseop laughs pulling her out of Hoon’s chest.
“I saw you, lying on the ground… you were dead” Soohyun raises an eyebrow doubting the mental sanity of May.
“I…” Hoon doesn’t know how to explain that he clearly saw how the bullet was about to hit Jaeseop directly on the chest and that the fact he was standing there was pretty much like a marvel. “I also…”
“She pushed me before it hit me” Jaeseop simply explains at the same time he holds May’s hand carefully and conduces her to Hoon’s car.
After a good half of hour, after settling down the protocols, taking care of the procedures with the man Soohyun wounded and after leaving a team in charge of processing the new crime scene Hoon, Soohyun, May and Jaeseop drove back to the laboratory for the urgent meeting Soohyun convoked and to analyze the evidence May and Jaeseop found previous to the firefight. The boss took the passanger’s seat while his two best detectives sat in the back with worried expressions. Apparently it was not May’s day and just to prove her point the latest events had apparently drained her remaining energy, she fell asleep immediately and some minutes later her head was hanging dangerously to the side. Jaeseop stared at her for various seconds before pulling her head against his arm gently. His mind just flew away, far form that place and May’s words kept replaying inside his head. “Jaeseop, baby, are you ok? Jaeseopie… Jae… do you hear me? Please don’t leave me alone” though probably May just let incoherent words leave her mouth out of the confusion of the moment he couldn’t help but thinking about it and how much he enjoyed those sweet words coming from her, he had never been so close to death as he was today and that’s probably why he keeps wondering why he feels so guilty and empty, maybe it’s just the fact he has never really do what he wants without stopping midway to think about all the rules he has set to himself or the thought of never been able to express his feelings properly. Jaeseop reflects about all those things he has never dared to do and how much he might regret it later, but once again there’s more important things than his psychological analysis, he reminds to himself.
“Hyung, you were saying that Taecyeon discovered who are the responsibles of Ricky’s kidnapping” Jaeseop suddenly speaks up, Soohyun looks at him through the rearview mirror.
“Well, didn’t you recognize something familiar in those men who attacked us?” Soohyun asks furrowing his eyebrows. Jaeseop meditates his reply for some seconds, not that he didn’t noticed at first glance, but somehow he’s afraid that his boss only corroborates his theory.
“I’m sorry Jae” He says sympathetically and Hoon glances over his shoulder briefly taking advantage of the red light, just to find Jaeseop’s shocked expression.
“It was their thing, apparently they’re coming after you, well in fact they’re coming after all of us but they want you, of course that doesn’t explain why they got Ricky, but we suppose they wanted to get May to blackmail you or maybe they wanted her to do something, we’re still not sure…” Though Soohyun keeps talking, Jaeseop has stopped paying attention; all he does now is trying to find an answer, why would the Japanese mafia try to kidnap May? Would it be possible that they knew it all? But how? if he has never even accept that himself? Something inside him tells him that no matter how much he has tried to deny it, they had found out about it. They knew it and now they could take advantage of that little fault he had allowed himself to commit, that guilty pleasure of falling in love.
